Self –Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS)
The inhuman practice of manual scavenging has been completely done away with in the State of Odisha after introduction of the “Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993”.
Govt. of India have taken various steps for rehabilitation of erstwhile manual scavengers and their dependents in alternative occupations and introduced various schemes with financial support for the same. The scheme of “Self-Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS)” was introduced by Govt. of India, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment during the year 2007-08.
Accordingly, the State Govt. has conducted a survey during June 2008 in which 16,386 manual scavengers and their dependents were identified for rehabilitation in alternative occupations. Rehabilitation of these 16,386 identified persons have been done since 2007-08 till 2009-10 as follows:

The balance 2770 persons have not been rehabilitated due to various reasons like death, migration, not interested for availing loan, engagement in other services etc.
